THE WEEKEND

Jan 8, 2023

Have you ever heard a song or caught the hint of a fragrance that catapults you to another place or time in your life?

I was sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic replaying the day through my head, trying to figure out what I was going to make for dinner, contemplating what I would do if I won the lottery and wondering why I bought those uncomfortable shoes that were killing my feet. Just the normal things we ladies think about at any given moment. I couldn’t stand the song that was on so I hit scan. No, No, No, WAIT, go back!!

Picture this: Back in the 80s a “Babe, Fox or Stud Muffin” was the accepted general title for a cute boy!! I know it’s not PC now but remember this was the 80s. Anyway, there was what I considered a Stud Muffin that was in the same circle of friends as mine. He was sooooo cute and very nice too!! Every now and then I caught him looking at me and the only way I knew he was looking at me is because obviously I was looking at him. LOL !! There was a small local Country & Western bar that must have been hurting for business because in the summer they hosted a Teen night. Again, remember this was 40 some years ago, times were different. One night I was there on Teen night and I saw HIM, My Stud Muffin. My knees started to buckle. Another friend of mine said there he is and pushed me in his direction. I was both horrified and glad because it gave me the opportunity to say something, anything, really anything. Nothing came out. He smiled and after a few sentences he asked me to dance. OMG!!! He asked ME to dance!!! The song was a Steve Wariner song “The Weekend”. It was the longest dance and the shortest dance of my life. To make a long sweet story a short sweet story we dated/went together (another high school term back then), we went on to live separate lives then miraculously were reunited.

Back to the bumper to bumper traffic. Though I hadn’t heard that song in years I knew every word, felt my body swaying to the music and was back dancing to that song all over again. All the strife and triviality of the day vanished from my mind. I could hear our boots shuffle on the dance floor, see the disco ball reflection in his eyes and feel his arm on my back. The wonderous possibilities of life, the anticipation of what might happen in the next few seconds and the realization that this perfect moment was about to end because the final refrain had started. I knew I would remember that moment forever and I did. Funny how all of that came from hearing a song.

I wish we all had or recognized more moments like that. No matter what prompts it a ringtone, a movie, a smell or a song, it’s all good stuff! PS, He’s still a Stud Muffin!! PSS One of biggest lines of that song is “I’ll be in love for the rest of my life”. Pretty cool considering my life now!!!

If you have a wonderful moment like that, please share with us.
